The City of Evanston is moving its operations to a new, downtown office building. The move aims to provide a more stable environment for city services while planning for future needs. The new city hall will be located in the Evanston Station building at 909 Davis St.
The City of Evanston is nearing the completion of its relocation to a new city hall in a downtown office building. The new Evanston City Hall will be situated in the Evanston Station building at 909 Davis St., which also houses other tenants, including an Endeavor Health Medical Group doctor's office. A news release on Thursday announced that the City of Evanston will finalize the transition of its municipal offices from the Lorraine H. Morton Civic Center, located at 2100 Ridge Ave.
, several blocks west of the Northwestern University quads, to the Davis Street building in early 2023. The new building will be christened the Lorraine H. Morton City Hall. The City of Evanston announced that the Collector's Office on the first floor of the Davis Street building will open on February 18th. Adjudication hearings will also commence on the first floor starting March 31st. City administration and public services facilities, such as the Mayor's office, City Council Chambers, the city Clerk's office, and the Human Resources and Health and Human Services offices, will open on the second floor on March 18th. Evanston City Council meetings will be held in the new chambers beginning April 14th.Other city departments, including the City Manager's office, Administrative Services, Community Development, Parks & Recreation, Public Works, Economic Development, the Law Department, and the Property Tax Assessment Review Office, will also be housed in the new building. Meanwhile, the seniors-only DMV facility will relocate to the Levy Senior Center, 300 Dodge Ave., on March 17th. Early voting will remain at 2100 Ridge Ave., according to the City of Evanston. The City of Evanston stated that the move will allow for operational stability while planning a new police and fire headquarters and evaluating long-term needs for Civic Center facilities. The city also highlighted enhanced safety, improved amenities such as a balcony overlooking Church Street, and proximity to downtown Evanston landmarks such as Fountain Square as benefits of the move. The Davis Street building is conveniently located adjacent to the Davis Street Metra Union Pacific North Line and Chicago Transit Authority Purple Line train stops. The current Lorraine H. Morton Civic Center on Ridge Avenue was constructed in 1901 as a Catholic girls' boarding and day school, originally known as Visitation Academy. The Sisters of Providence St. Mary-of-the-Woods order acquired the school in 1915 and renamed it Marywood Academy, according to the Evanston History Center. An addition to the building was completed in 1925.The school closed its doors in 1970. It was not until 1979 that the building became the Evanston Civic Center. Evanston had a series of earlier city hall facilities, as noted by the Evanston History Center in the Evanston RoundTable publication. The first Evanston City Hall opened in 1892, shortly after Evanston's incorporation as a city. In 1942, the city hall facilities moved to the Evanston Country Club at Lake Street and Oak Avenue, historians documented. The 1892 city hall was demolished four years later.By the 1960s, Evanston was again in search of a new city hall space, and several proposals for a new city office complex were put forward. However, the financial challenges of the 1970s led to the selection of the Ridge Avenue building as an alternative, historians wrote. The 909 Davis St. building, which is now housing city hall operations, was constructed in 2002
