EvanHelpUs: Eyebrow-raisers? Rangers pitching prospects go deeper than Jack Leiter, Cole Winn 📢 Evan_P_Grant
: I think there were some differences between 2020 and this. In 2020, things were ramping up when everything was shut down and guys, particularly pitchers, almost stopped throwing programs entirely for a while, then had to ramp back up quickly in July. This has been more of a slow, steady burn, rather than a stop and start. Guys continued to throw during the lockout, but on typical winter throwing programs.
That said, anybody will tell you the reason spring training is typically six weeks is all about pitchers and building them up at a slow, measured pace. This four-week sprint is not ideal. There is no doubt about that. It’s one of the reasons I thought that pitchers would potentially pay the biggest price for the lockout.
I think one other difference is this: While there were some differences to the 2020 shutdown, teams have gone through something of this nature previously. Experience is the best teacher. You can bet teams learned — or at least think they learned — something from that experience and are using that this spring.
Just went thru the MLB Trade Rumor list of FAs for next year, and other than Gallo & Judge, it's mostly some solid SSs and not a lot else. Do you think they're aiming for a reunion with Joey, or saving their powder for 2023 ?
