A fire broke out at the Moss Landing Power Plant, prompting evacuation orders and road closures in Monterey County.
The Monterey County Sheriff's Office issued evacuation orders Thursday evening following a fire at the Moss Landing Power Plant . Fire crews are on scene battling the blaze. The plant, a battery storage facility operated by Vistra Energy, ignited, prompting immediate action from authorities. Evacuation orders were issued at approximately 6:30 p.m. for residents in specific zones of Moss Landing. These zones include areas south of Elkhorn Slough, north of Molera Rd.
and Monterey Dunes Way, and west of Castroville Blvd. and Elk Horn Rd. to the ocean. The affected zones are: MRY-B037, MRY-B047, MRY-B050, MRY-B051, MRY-B053, MRY-B058, and MRY-B060. The Castroville Rec Center has been designated as a Temporary Evacuation Point for displaced residents.Earlier in the evening, Monterey County officials issued a warning for residents in zones MRY-B047 and MRY-B053 to take precautions. Residents were urged to close windows and doors, shut off air conditioning systems, and avoid the area to allow for unimpeded access by emergency vehicles. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) Santa Cruz office announced the closure of State Route 1 at Salinas Rd. due to the fire. Motorists are advised to avoid the area and utilize US-101 as an alternative route. Additionally, Dolan Rd. and Castroville Blvd. have also been closed by authorities.The National Weather Service Bay Area shared images from the fire on X, highlighting the visible heat signature in satellite imagery. The Moss Landing Power Plant, located on Cabrillo Highway in the unincorporated area of Monterey County, is a natural gas-powered electricity generation plant.
