Evacuations along the Salinas River in Monterey and Santa Cruz counties were expanded Monday morning as the river spilled over its banks.

The flooding comes after an atmospheric river dumped rain over Northern and Central California on Thursday and Friday; aFlood stage on the Salinas River is 23 feet; this is the point at which it rises above its banks and inundates nearby areas with water. At 2 a.m. Monday, the river rose to 26 feet, and was forecast to hit 27.
