The EUR/USD exchange rate declines as China faces a 10% tariff, US-China trade talks remain uncertain, and the ECB maintains a dovish stance.
The EUR/USD exchange rate experienced a decline on Tuesday as China faced a 10% tariff on all imports. This development came amidst ongoing negotiations between the US and China, with President Trump stating on Monday that talks were likely to occur within the next 24 hours. Trump also hinted at potentially substantial tariffs if a deal with China was not reached.
Adding to the pressure on the Euro, the US imposed tariffs specifically targeting the European Union, though these remain under negotiation. Meanwhile, President Trump temporarily suspended steep tariffs on Mexico and Canada after their leaders agreed to deploy 10,000 soldiers to the US border to combat drug trafficking. These tariffs on Mexico and Canada are postponed for at least 30 days. The Eurozone's Harmonized Index of Consumer Prices increased to 2.5% year-over-year in January, exceeding market expectations of 2.4% and marking the highest inflation rate since July 2024. The rise was primarily driven by significant increases in energy costs, though non-energy industrial goods inflation remained unchanged at 0.5%. Core inflation, excluding volatile food and energy sectors, held steady at 2.7% for the fifth consecutive month, slightly above the anticipated 2.6%.Adding to the Euro's downward pressure, the European Central Bank's (ECB) dovish policy outlook continues to weigh on the currency. Last week, the ECB reduced its Deposit Facility Rate by 25 basis points (bps) to 2.75% and its Main Refinancing Operations Rate to 2.9%, as anticipated. The ECB's actions indicate a willingness to stimulate the Eurozone economy, which may contribute to further weakness in the Euro. The EUR/USD pair's future trajectory will likely be influenced by the outcome of US-China trade negotiations, the implementation of tariffs on the EU, and the ECB's monetary policy decisions.
