The Locality project has reached a significant milestone to scale and validate innovative algae-based products.
Researchers have successfully produced an aquafeed prototype on an industrial scale, which will be tested in a farm scale fish-feeding trial in Norway from August to October 2026.
Nearly 70 ingredients were screened to identify promising algal strains.value chains in countries bordering the Baltic and North Seas, Locality sets the basis for the market uptake of innovative, socially responsible and sustainable products formulated using algal biomasses. Natural dyes and textile additives are among the algae-based products Locality is producing. Other products include algae-based food, feed for aquaculture, biofertilizers, nutrients/biostimulants and nutraceuticals.
“The successful upscaling indicates that the process can be reliably reproduced outside of a laboratory setting, thereby supporting Locality’s objective of developing nature-positive, algae-based products for the aquaculture industry,” the organization stated. In April, Locality published the results of a study that found algae to be a game-changer in sustainable fashion.
Innovations likeThe report highlighted how Alginate, which is derived from brown macroalgae, can be used as a natural alternative to conventional materials, and how macroalgae and microalgae are being explored for their pigments and large-scale potential. The pigments could replace synthetic chemicals and reduce environmental impact. For the report, project partner Mounid, a Swedish material innovation startup that develops bio-based, biodegradable textile dyes derived from microalgae, developed and tested a dye formulation at the University of Borås in Sweden.
The result was a “visually appealing” shade of blue that bonded well to cellulosic fabrics, which Moundi turned into a kimono. While the potential of the algae-based products is clear, Locality said there are important knowledge gaps and areas that need improvement.
