Theresa May had requested an extension until June, but at a summit in Brussels the leaders rejected both that and a longer delay to the end of the year many had argued for.
German chancellor Angela Merkel was more conciliatory. “We must ask ourselves what's in the interest of good cooperation and what's in our interest. And that's an orderly Brexit and the unity of the 27,” she said.
“Three quarters of the members states spoke,” the official said, and “about half [of these] were in favour of extending until December or March [2020], the others were open to the idea in principle.”
