He was speaking at the first Energy Transformation Summit at the Durban International Convention Centre on Wednesday.
Kaunda said they have set a target of reducing by 20 percent reliance on the national grid in two years' time and by 40 percent in 2030.The mayor said there are already over 30 priority energy infrastructure projects in the procurement plan. "In the short-term, we are procuring new generation capacity of 400 megawatts from independent power producers.
"One hundred megawatts has been allocated to solar pvs and 300 megawatts from gas to power. We are anticipating archiving commercial operational by 2025 and 2026, respectively."
