Estelle Harris has passed away at the age of 93. She is best known for portraying George Constanza's mother on Seinfeld and voicing Mrs. Potatohead in the Toy Story movies.
Actor Estelle Harris has passed away at the age of 93. The esteemed actress and comedian played a number of iconic roles during her impressive, wide-ranging career that spanned decades. Many might associate the distinctive timbre of Harris' vocal talents with their childhoods – Harris portrayed the sometimes shrill, always beloved Mrs. Potatohead in Pixar's Toy Story franchise.
Due to her unique, expressive voice and impeccable comedic timing, Harris gravitated toward voice-over work in films like Toy Story, as well other idiosyncratic characters in television. The actor offered her talents over the course of her career to the roles of Mama Lipsky in Kim Possible, Thelma in The Proud Family, Mama Gunda in Tarzan II, and Mrs. Turtle in Mickey Mouse Works.
"It is with the greatest remorse and sadness to announce that Estelle Harris has passed on this evening at 6:25pm. Her kindness, passion, sensitivity, humor, empathy and love were practically unrivaled, and she will be terribly missed by all those who knew her.” Born on April 4, 1928 in Manhattan, New York to Polish Jewish immigrant parents who owned a candy shop, Harris first began acting in community theater roles and other local productions while simultaneously raising her three children, Eric, Glen, and Taryn. After her children left the nest, she committed full time to her acting career and worked steadily in the late 1980s and early 1990s before fatefully nabbing the role of Ms. Costanza in Seinfeld in 1992.
Harris left behind a legacy that transcended the boundaries of the screen or stage with her beloved, culturally revered characters. Notably, Harris' career took off after raising her children, illustrating an admirable dedication to both her career and her children in a society that often emphasizes solely the domestic role. The fact that her career began later in her life also subverted gender roles and did not adhere to typical expectations of women in Hollywood.
