A couple in Brentwood, Essex, executed what staff describe as a premeditated 'dine and dash' at The Halfway House restaurant on May 16. After ordering an extensive meal including two steaks, multiple sides and 14 Baby Guinness shots, they fled the premises without paying their £231.30 bill. General Manager Deanne Perkins explains how CCTV captured the incident, the woman's attempted return with partial payment, and the ongoing police investigation. The incident is part of a concerning trend of dine-and-dash offenses across the UK in 2026, affecting small businesses during difficult economic times.
General Manager Deanne Perkins of The Halfway House restaurant in Brentwood, Essex , is still stunned by what she calls the 'ultimate dine and dash ' that occurred on May 16.
A couple visited the establishment, enjoyed a lavish meal, and then fled without paying a penny of their substantial bill. The incident, captured on CCTV, reveals what Perkins believes was a planned escape. The couple initially seated by a server requested to move to a table closer to the restaurant's back door, a move Perkins interprets as premeditated.
Once settled, they ordered two steaks, several starters and sides, ice cream, and notably, 14 Baby Guinness shots-a quantity that surprised Perkins given the restaurant's generous portion sizes. The 45-year-old manager noted that the pair cleaned their plates, a remarkable feat considering the hearty portions that typically leave other customers struggling to finish.
The woman then left the restaurant's front door while talking on her phone, after which the man checked to ensure no staff were nearby and bolted out of the back door. External cameras captured the pair running away across the car park, leaving behind an unpaid bill of £231.30. Perkins reported the incident to Essex Police and shared the footage online to warn other local businesses.
She expressed her disgust, stating, 'It's such a kick in the teeth' for a small business like theirs. The public response to the shared footage has been 'fantastic,' offering much-needed support. Perkins emphasized that their customers are predominantly regulars who frequent the same tables and order the same meals, making the betrayal by these 'random customers' particularly upsetting. Every loss at this time is a significant blow for a small operation.
The woman eventually returned to the restaurant and paid £90 towards the bill, claiming she had no idea she had left without paying. Perkins described her as shamed into making the partial payment.
However, the man has not returned to pay the remaining £141.30. Essex Police confirmed they continue to seek a man in connection with the report of making off without payment from a business in West Horndon on 16 May. This incident is not isolated; it follows a spate of similar dine-and-dash cases reported across the UK in 2026.
In Devon, a family of four fled a fish and chip shop after a £45 meal on May 24, nearly involving their children. In Hastings, East Sussex, a group refused to pay a £146 bill and threatened staff in February. On Valentine's Day in Manchester, another group walked out after a £234.45 feast of steaks, pornstar martinis, and ice cream.
These repeated offenses highlight a growing challenge for the hospitality sector, where the combination of economic pressure and brazen theft threatens the viability of small businesses
