An ESPN employee recorded ESPN star Rachel Nichols' private conversation while in the Orlando NBA bubble.

An ESPN employee recorded a private conversation between ESPN star Rachel Nichols, the host of"The Jump", and another person and distributed video clips of that recording in an attempt to smear Nichols, Deadspin reported Thursday.

“We are extremely disappointed about the leak of a private conversation,” ESPN said in a statement to USA TODAY Sports. “It’s indefensible and an intrusion on Rachel’s privacy. As for the substance of the conversation, it is not reflective of our decision making on staffing assignments for the NBA, which has largely been driven by the circumstances of the pandemic.”

Nichols is in the Orlando area covering the NBA’s 2019-20 season restart at Disney World and was on Thursday’s edition of"The Jump". Nichols, who used to be a print reporter for newspapers in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Washington, D.C., is one of the prominent media voices on the NBA. According to Deadspin, which received the videos but did not publish them, Nichols’ face never appears on camera as she talks about personnel matters at ESPN. Deadspin also did not report the contents of the conversation because it was “unable to view the entirety of the conversation recorded.”

The recorded videos were meant to “ ‘expose’ Nichols as a ‘back-stabber’ and a phony ally,” Deadspin reported while adding, “Nothing in the videos Deadspin viewed show Nichols saying anything that could be construed as either a back-stabber or phony ally.”CORONAVIRUS:
