Charter has around 15 million cable homes in the country but is not currently carrying any Disney-owned networks, including ESPN and ABC, as the two sides haggle over the terms of a carriage deal.
, explained how big the stakes could be: “Sports leagues could extract ever higher rights fees from ESPN because ESPN could extract ever higher affiliate fees from cable TV providers; if the latter is broken then the former is as well.”
Further complicating matters for ESPN is that the margins for cable companies have shrunk. The future of Charter’s business, the company has said, is not video but broadband Internet. So if keeping cable customers by offering ESPN was once core to their business, it will be less so in the future. To this end, Charter is actively directing its customers to purchase new video packages with Fubo TV.
