Eskom says City of Tshwane owes it just under R1.9 billion

The utility said in a media statement on Wednesday afternoon that the City of Tshwane had “once again defaulted in payment of its Eskom debt”. The debt now sits at just under R1.9 billion.

“As Eskom’s cash flow challenges and the the provisions of PFMA dictate, Eskom is accordingly exploring all avenues available to it to recover this debt including but not limited to, approaching the courts for relief,” senior manager for customer services for Eskom in Gauteng, Mpumelelo Mnyani said in a statement.

The utility reports that the municipality’s March 2023 invoice, which was payable on 19th April was short paid by R179 million. Further to that, the City of Tshwane has not paid its April 2023 and May 2023 invoices amounting to R776 million and R904 million respectively. The May invoice is due on 17th June.

Eskom has appealed to the city to settle its debt stating that “Eskom does not have the financial capacity to continue supplying bulk electricity to the City without the necessary payments.”
