Eskom retires 61 year old power plant, talks up renewables

The 61 year old power plant located in Mpumalanga was shut down at midday today. According to the utility, this shut down won’t “have a significant impact on the national electricity grid” as it’s contribution was minimal.

“The decommissioning of the power station has followed a diligent process which comprised undertaking a socioeconomic impact study.

This conversion is being undertaken under the banner of the Komati Repowering and Repurposing project. As reported by, by 2030, the transition to renewable energy will have created 430 permanent jobs and 7 700 temporary jobs.
