ESKOM LIVE | Stage 3 load shedding to start from 16:00 on Monday
Eskom has announced that Stage 3 load shedding will be implemented on Monday from 16:00 until 05:00 on Tuesday morning. It will then drop to Stage 2 until 16:00 on Tuesday, when Stage 3 will again be implemented until 05:00 on Wednesday. Stage 2 will then again be implemented until further notice.
"We currently have 4 177MW on planned maintenance, while another 16 922MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns."Stage 2 load shedding to start from 09:00 This is due to a"high level of breakdowns" of power stations, and the need to preserve emergency generation reserves. The ongoing load shedding is mainly due to the need to preserve emergency generation reserves owing to a high level of breakdowns and the delay in returning some generating units to service, Eskom said. Since Thursday morning a generating unit each at Camden, Duvha, Kusile and Majuba power stations were taken offline for repairs.
Investigations are underway to figure out the cause of the failure and to ascertain the extent of the damage, he added. Stage 1 will start at 05:00 and continue until 16:00, after which Stage 2 will start and continue until the next morning. Since Saturday afternoon, a unit each at Tutuka and Matimba power stations were taken offline for repairs, while a unit each at Kendal, Kusile, Matla and Tutuka power stations were returned to service.
Some 6 234MW is out on planned maintenance, while another 13 779MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns.Load shedding will continue into the weekend, but will be dropped to Stage 2 and Stage 1, Eskom said on Thursday morning. "These, together with persistent high levels of breakdowns of generating units, are among the major contributors to the continuing generation capacity shortages."
"During the weekend the breakdown of a generating unit each at Duvha, Kriel and Medupi powerstations, as well as the delayed returns of a generating unit each at Camden, Kusile, Komati, and Kendal have exacerbated current generation capacity shortages, forcing the escalation of loadshedding," it said.
Currently there are 5 146MW on planned maintenance, while another 17 408MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns. Stage 3 and 2 load shedding will again be implemented continuously from 16:00 on Friday until 05:00 Monday morning, Eskom said. Stage 3 load shedding will continue to be implemented at 16:00 on Wednesday and Thursday, but will be extended until 05:00 on Thursday, Eskom said on Wednesday afternoon. The extension was in order to replenish the dam levels at pumped storage stations.
Stage 2 load shedding will be suspended at midnight, and then implemented daily from 16:00 to midnight on Monday to Wednesday, Eskom said on Sunday.Since Saturday afternoon, two generation units at Grootvlei as well as a unit each at Kriel and Majuba power stations were returned to service. But a generation unit at Lethabo power station was taken offline for repairs.
Eskom said it would publish a further update on Friday afternoon, or as soon as any significant changes occur. The power utility said that since Saturday two generation units at Kriel and a unit each at Kendal, Komati, Lethabo, Majuba and Matla power stations have returned to service. There is currently 5 487MW out on planned maintenance, while another 14 061MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns.Load shedding will be suspended at 05:00 on Saturday morning due to lower weekend demand and adequate emergency generation reserves, Eskom said in a statement on Friday.
This after a generation unit each at Arnot, Kriel, Lethabo, Matla as well as two units at Camden Power Station returned to service on Tuesday night. Load shedding will be escalated to Stage 4 at 18:00 and maintained until further notice after a generation unit each tripped at Kendal and Lethabo power stations.
A generating unit each at Kusile and Majuba power stations were returned to service. A generating unit each at Duvha, Kendal, Komati, Kusile, Matimba, Lethabo and Tutuka power stations were taken offline for repairs. Gordhan met with the directors of Eskom on Tuesday to inform them he would "restructure and reconstitute" the board, and thanked them for their service.
Asked by MPs whether he would be introducing new skills to the board, particularly skills in electrical engineering, Gordhan confirmed that there would be a"new set of skills".Stage 4 to last until Saturday morning, with Stage 3 for weekend, as diesel delivery arrives In addition to all of the eight Camden Power Station units that were taken offline due to de-mineralised water contamination on Wednesday night as a result of the incorrect valve being opened, a generating unit at Kriel Power Station was also taken offline for repairs.
"Stage 4 will be maintained until we can resume diesel supplies to the two Open-Cycle Gas Turbine stations." "While we expect diesel deliveries from Tuesday onwards, should this uncertainty of supply persist, higher stages of loadshedding may be required," it warned. Eskom said it was currently experiencing constraints from its diesel suppliers that were affecting the availability of bulk diesel to the Ankerlig and Gourikwa open-cycle gas turbines, which have a combined capacity of 2 000MW.
"While some generation units are anticipated to return to service, it is necessary to continue the load shedding to limit the usage of the emergency generation reserves." Eskom has 4 098MW on planned maintenance, while another 17 121MW of capacity is unavailable due to breakdowns. South Africa is teetering on the brink of its most severe power cuts yet, just two months after the government announced emergency measures to try to end intermittent outages, prompting President Cyril Ramaphosa to cut short an overseas trip to oversee the response to the crisis.
The statement comes as Eskom declared Stage 6 load shedding for the third time and continues to grapple with multiple breakdowns.
