Nersa has updated the rate municipalities pay Eskom to provide free basic electricity to their customers.
a National Free Basic Electricity rate of R1.94 for the 2024/25 municipal financial year, effective 1 July 2024.
Poor households can qualify for free basic electricity of 50kWh or 60kWh per month, depending on the municipality in which they reside.Nersa says this amount of energy should be sufficient to provide basic lighting, media, access, water heating using a kettle, and ironing.“The National Treasury provide the FBE funding to local authorities through equitable share allocation, as identified by the Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs,” the regulator says.
The regulator said it is engaging with government departments to review the amount of free electricity provided, considering the initiative kicked off under very different economic conditions in 2003.“2003 was a long time ago. From a policy point of view, the intention was good. However, from time to time, policies need to be reviewed to see if they are still relevant,” Moleshse told Newzroom Afrika.
