Eskom warns public about dangers near power lines: Building homes and structures close poses serious risks.
Eskom, South Africa’s national electricity provider, is issuing a stern warning to the public concerning the dangers associated with building homes and other structures near power lines. Here are the five dangers of building near power lines
In an effort to raise awareness and emphasise the gravity of the situation, Eskom outlines the following dangers associated with constructing structures under power lines:: Any fault along the power line can cause a very high current flow down the pylon to the ground. If someone is beneath the line during such an event, the current can flow through the person and lead to fatality.
Erecting structures such as shacks, within power line servitudes goes against Eskom regulations and presents safety risks to people and livestock. If the power line collapses due to a fault or severe weather, the electrical current running through it could fatally injure a personstressed the importance of recognising these hazards, stating, “The common belief that power lines are harmless because of their size and distance from the ground must be corrected.
Additionally, as Eskom intensifies its efforts to raise awareness about the dangers of building near power lines, the public is urged to prioritise safety and comply with established regulations to mitigate risks and ensure the well-being of communities across South Africa.
