Eskom’s diesel budget for the current financial year is R29 billion, and by the beginning of January, it had already spent R25 billion.
Eskom can build the largest solar farm in South Africa six times over with its annual diesel budget of R29 billion. By the beginning of January, it had already spent R25 billion.
Its project site spans 473 hectares of a 2,674-hectare farm and has more than half a million modules that convert sunlight into power. It generates enough electricity to power 75,000 houses annually. However, solar power is intermittent as it is highly dependent on the weather, so extensive battery systems can accompany large projects to enable them to have a more consistent output.
Scatec ASA built the plant with funding of around R18.65 billion from lenders, including Standard Bank as lead arranger and British International Investment .
