The Seguro Energy Storage Project has run into opposition from some residents concerned about a potential fire

An aerial rendering of the proposed Seguro Energy Storage Project that Fortune 500 company AES wans to build in Eden Valley, between San Marcos and Escondido. The project would be built on a 22.5-acre plot of land and store enough batteries to power an estimated 240,000 homes for four hours. A recent fire at an energy storage facility in Otay Mesa continues to stoke questions about the fate of a large battery project that a developer wants to build in North County.

Some Eden Valley residents who were already against the Seguro project before the Gateway fire, have hardened their opposition.“a ticking time bomb.” Others expressed concerns about exit routes should a fire break out, toxic fumes and potential impacts to the nearbysaid approving the Seguro proposal “would be the nail the coffin” for nearby homeowners to get affordable homeowners insurance.

She said recent improvements in safety “have resulted in a dramatic reduction in failure rates” at battery storage facilities and the Seguro project will play a crucial role in meeting Escondido’s climate goal of zero-carbon electricity in the city by 2035. If approved, Seguro would generate 320 megawatts and 1,280 megawatt-hours of electricity that would flow to California’s electric grid — enough to power about 240,000 homes for four hours.
