Ending the cycle of opioid use isn’t easy for anyone, but for pregnant women it can be especially hard. A few dedicated women in Cleveland aim to change that.

Newly sober, the soon-to-be mothers often lack basic resources they need to support their recovery. When they arrive at Moms House most don’t have a driver’s license, much less a car, Matia said. They need transportation to their pre- and postnatal medical appointments, AA meetings and therapy. Creecy, 29, has been living in Moms House for over a year. She has a 6-month-old daughter who lives with her at Moms House, and three other daughters not in her custody as a result of her addiction.

As the opioid epidemic worsened in Cleveland in the early 2000s, Bailit says she began seeing more pregnant patients who were dependent on opioids, and by 2010 she says she realized that one of the biggest unmet needs was sober housing that could address their unique circumstances.

Everyone is also involved in some sort of intensive outpatient therapy. And the longest residents mentor the newer ones. “It’s so cool to watch them grow and help each other,” Matia said.
