'Swells generated by the hurricane will continue to affect the [U.S. East Coast] through the early part of this week,' the National Hurricane Center warned.
Hurricane Ernesto has intensified again after briefly dropping down to a tropical storm, whipping up dangerous currents along the East Coast on its journey northwards. The hurricane, which originated as a small depression in the central Atlantic and strengthened to a hurricane by the time it slammed into Bermuda, briefly weakened back to a tropical storm after making landfall. However, it has now inched its way back up into a Category 1 hurricane.
'Rip currents that can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water where it becomes difficult to return to safety,' the National Weather Service said in a statement. 'If you become caught in a rip current, yell for help. Remain calm, do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for help. If you have to swim out of a rip current, swim parallel to shore and back toward the beach when possible.
