Erin Moriarty discusses the significant time jump in The Boys finale, her character's pregnancy, and the hopeful ending for Starlight.

Erin Moriarty , who plays Starlight /Annie January in the hit series The Boys , recently opened up in an interview about the shows finale time jump and her characters pregnancy.

Speaking with ScreenRants Grant Hermanns for the new Call of Duty Mobile crossover season with The Boys, Moriarty revealed her shock and joy upon learning that Annie would survive and receive a happy ending. I knew over a year prior to filming the finale and the final season that I was going to survive, she stated. The actress also disclosed that she only learned about Annies pregnancy twist about a month before filming the final scenes.

Moriarty explained that the showrunners were deliberately selective about revealing plot details. Our showrunners had been very deliberate in terms of only letting us know certain storyline components, if we need to know them, she said. She queried elements of the pregnancy, such as when it occurs in the timeline and whether her character would show symptoms during the main events of the finale.

The actress was relieved to learn that Annie was not pregnant during the real-time events of the episode. She asked the showrunner if she was pregnant during scenes like the fight with The Deep or Butchers death, and was told no. Moriarty extrapolated that the jump cut into the future is pretty far, meaning significant time has passed since the climax of the season. Moriarty expressed her delight at the optimistic conclusion, which contrasts with the shows otherwise cynical tone.

Hope is the greatest personal currency you can hold, she stated, noting that the ending provided a much-needed positive note for viewers. The finale shows Hughie and Annie running a business together and Annie heavily pregnant, suggesting at least a year has passed. This ending was particularly important for Annies character arc, as she started as a hopeful hero but became jaded over the seasons. Seeing her finally achieve a happy ending brought closure to her journey.

While the shows legacy may not be as strong as its peak in season 3, the finale effectively wrapped up several character arcs. The flash-forward confirms that despite Voughts continued malevolence, some characters earned a bright future. Moriarty also reflected on the challenges of keeping the pregnancy a secret from fans and the cast. She appreciated being able to focus on the emotional weight of the final season without the added pressure of portraying pregnancy.

The actress concluded by praising the showrunners for their careful storytelling and for giving her character a well-deserved happy ending. The finale, while criticized by some, managed to deliver a hopeful message that resonated with many viewers. For Moriarty, it was the perfect note to end a series that often explored the darker aspects of humanity and heroism. The interview provides a deeper insight into the creative decisions behind the final episode and the actors personal journey with the role
