The Man United boss hinted at his favourite style of play during his debut press conference while also delivering a caveat.
"Never. We will never play that," said Erik ten Hag post-Manchester City after being asked when fans would see the type of football he instilled at Ajax at Manchester United.
Earlier this season, Ten Hag went on record saying he wishes for United to be the best counter-attacking side in the world. He had the prime opportunity to carry out such instructions against City, but instead, supporters saw a combination of nothingness. In Ten Hag’s defence, it helps if the players you have can stay on the pitch. United have had 17 first-team players injured at some point, one of whom - Lisandro Martinez - could be out until next year.
"Maybe you have seen Ajax? And I like that," he replied. "But it is always players who dictate the way of play. I have the ideal, I will line up my best team, and I will line up my players like that to get the best out of them."
