Man United centre-back Jonny Evans rolled back the years to prove Erik ten Hag was right to offer him a different kind of role.
Out with the old, in with the new? Erik ten Hag may like to argue differently but this is not a policy he has endorsed. Perhaps out with the old, in with the used-before.
The broadcasters gave the man of the match award to Fernandes but he courteously but rightly handed it over to Evans, who branded the evening “one of the best nights of my life”. There understandably would have been doubts about whether Evans would have been able to make an on-pitch impact upon his return.
The news didn’t come totally out of the blue. Evans had travelled with United on their pre-season tour of the US having returned to Carrington to merely build up fitness ahead of finding a new club upon his release from Leicester. He ended up playing 174 minutes in the States. Explaining why he had initially taken Evans on tour, Ten Hag said: “We know he's a really experienced player, but also a very good person with a big personality and authority. He can help the young players, especially.”
But Evans showed the traits that made him so beloved by the United fanbase before he left, and put in a veteran’s masterclass in defending. And by doing so, his signing has been vindicated.
