Man Utd have had a difficult start to Erik ten Hag's second season in charge and tactically it has been a tough campaign for the Dutchman.
In terms of pure results, Manchester United have timed their best run of form this season pretty well, allowing them to head into the Old Trafford derby against Manchester City claiming they have momentum and confidence behind them.
United's players don't have such luxuries to fall back on. The wins against Brentford, Sheffield United and FC Copenhagen were gritty, determined affairs, but in none of those games did Erik ten Hag's side play well. Their first 45 minutes against FC Copenhagen on Tuesday was probably the worst half of the season. The end of it was greeted by boos and the reaction was generally one of stunned apprehension that they had played like that.
That is clearly a problem and while the injury crisis Ten Hag has had to deal with this season is a legitimate excuse to a degree, this is still mostly his team now and it is one still lacking an identity.
