Prosecutors claim Richins poisoned her husband's drink using a lethal dose of fentanyl before later writing a children's book on how to deal with grief. The five-week murder trial started on Monday, Feb. 23, with defense attorneys fighting back on that claim, arguing Eric Richins used substances such as marijuana gummies and hydrocodone to handle chronic pain. The topic of Eric Richins' drug use was a major talking point with Cody Wright. Defense Attorney Kathryn Nester questioned Wright on Eric's drug use, with Wright saying he had been told throughout the years that Eric Richins used "Red Devils" in high school. However, he could not say what those were. "I don't know what illicit street drugs entail," said Wright. "I know he used some form of drugs; I don't know what they are exactly." Kouri Richins' defense team pushed to impeach Wright as a witness, claiming he had testified falsely and inconsistently. Judge Richard Mrazik disagreed, ruling that nothing impeachable had taken place. Wright's testimony joins a long list given by several key witnesses in the state's case against Kouri Richins.
