This indie RPG is an offline single-player game that simulates playing an MMO, complete with 'simulated players' to adventure with.
Do you ever find yourself playing an MMO RPG , but actively avoiding other players? Have you ever sought out the communal joy of inhabiting a virtual world with other people, but without actually having to interact with them at all? Well, you’re not alone.
The developers at Burgee Media, the folks behind recent indie RPG, there’s a decent chance you’d assume it’s just another retro-style MMORPG. And that’s the point. But in reality, this is an entirely offline single-player game and all of the other “players” you see running around are actually “simulated players” designed to only look and feel and act like other people. Other than that very specific detail, this is a game that really plays like an MMORPG. There are tons of quests to embark on, gear to collect, and raids to complete. You visit towns and trade in your loot just like in other MMOs. In fact, you can even group up with the simulated players and go on adventures together—they’re just not real.: “These players will level up alongside you , they'll find new items on their own and they'll find them with your help. They'll ask for loot drops, they'll buy and sell loot, join and leave guilds, and even invite you to raids as they get to know you. They'll remember you and how you treat them.” To be honest, the simulated players concept sounds incredibly fascinating. Imagine if a system like this could be injected into dead and gone MMORPGs likeI used to think I was the only one who felt this way. Growing up, I’d chop trees injust to feel like I belonged somewhere, but rarely even used the chat box. Eventually I worked up the courage to be more outgoing and started making friends in games likelast year and finally have a few friends I play games with nowadays. But I’d be lying if I said that I never crave the comforting familiarity of being alone in a crowded server around launch time for a new MMO. Back in the day, I was known to sink hundreds and sometimes thousands of hours into MMO games. In fact, this isn’t exactly a proud confession, butdirectly contributed to me failing a class my senior year of college which I had to retake in the summer. That’s just the way it goes sometimes! But I’m a dad now. I have two young kids, a wife, a mortgage, and tons of responsibilities that limit my ability to really get obsessed with games like I used to, so as a result, I mostly play single-player stuff these days. I almost exclusively play games during the middle of the day in between work commitments or late at night after everyone else is asleep. I typically reserve afternoon and evening hours for family time, which is when most other people end up playing things.
