Turkey is marking the 100th anniversary of the creation of the modern, secular republic from the ruins of the Ottoman Empire on Sunday with few pageantries and no gala reception to memorialize the important milestone.

Erdogan on Sunday observed the traditional protocol of laying a wreath at Ataturk’s mausoleum in the capital and shook hands with a procession of ambassadors and high-level officials offering their congratulations. In the afternoon, he was scheduled to travel to Istanbul to watch a procession of military ships on the Bosporus, followed by a drones and fireworks show. In his speech marking the occasion, Erdogan was expected to highlight his government’s achievements in the past 20 years.

’’The government did its best to make these celebrations forgotten and to trivialize them,” said Gul Erbil, a 66-year-old retired film director who will be toasting the centennial at a restaurant with friends. “The sad thing is ... it’s republic too. It’s something that gave freedom, too.” But Ahmet Hakan, columnist for the pro-government Hurriyet newspaper, says the scaled-back celebration became “inevitable” due to Israel’s actions in Gaza, which have triggered a wave of protests particularly in Muslim-majority countries, in response to Hamas' attack on Israel on Oct. 7.

On Sunday, tens of thousands flocked to Ataturk's mausoleum. Music, including a march that was written to mark the republic's 10th anniversary, blared from cars adorned with Turkish flags. Many wore red and white — the colors of the flag.
