2021 also marks the 15th anniversary of Erdem Moralioglu's fashion label
Like mother, like son. Scrolling back through his collections, it turns out that this isn’t the first time that Moralioglu has been up to Windsor Castle. The first was when he was granted access to study the Queen’s wardrobe. For spring 2018, he put together an imaginitve picture of Elizabeth II as a young woman and a fan of jazz and dancing, who once met Duke Ellington at a Royal Command performance.
One thing about Erdem: He knows how to throw a party to mark an occasion. Quite a few of them have been legend in London: his and Sara’s 40th birthdays, with a disco-floor at the ICA in 2017, his and Philip’s spectacularly elegant wedding at Greenwich Naval College in 2019, and going right back to 2011 and the rented digs in the East End he shared with Sara and Philip, the royal wedding-day rumpus of a house party, complete with a huge William and Kate-decorated cake.
This talent for entertaining people and seizing the life-affirming moment is Erdem Moralioglu all over, and indivisible from the kind of frothy, extravagant, and escapist formal dressing with which he started charming young women the day he left the Royal College of Art, pretty hard up, in 2006. “I rebel in lace and tulle!” he told me when I tracked him down in a tiny windowless room where he was making his first dazzlingly-embellished dresses.
That readiness with a funny, pithy quote is a whole other level of Erdem’s social talent for lightening any moment. I once stood next to him at a reception for the fashion industry at Buckingham Palace and saw him make the Queen laugh. The MBE citation, which is signed by the Queen, is actually a civil honor, presented not by royal decree, but through the British cabinet office as a recognition for citizens who “make an outstanding contribution to the community. They will have had a long-term, significant impact and stand out as an example to others.
