CPS Energy stares down liklihood ERCOT will keep Braunig plants open past retirement to prevent 'cascading outages' on Texas grid
CPS Energy is facing the likelihood the state grid operator will force it to keep its aging gas-fired generating plants at the Braunig Power Station running past their proposed March retirement. The city-owned utility wants to shut down the three 60-year-old plants, which it says can no longer be run without major expenses.
General Counsel Chad Seely told board members Thursday. That leaves board members have voiced worries about the time it will take for CPS to examine and repair the plants. They asked CPS to speed up the two-month process, but the utility said no simple shortcuts exists. : Want to keep our gas-fired generating plants running? It will cost you. “If we find something related to safety then of course we will not be able to restart the unit until that’s resolved,” he said. CPS can’t know, for example, if piping has cracked until it shuts down and opens up the plant to look inside. Replacing pipe sectioning could add weeks or months onto the timeline, Urrutia said. He also warned finding parts could take from 12 to more than 40 weeks, depending on what’s needed.
