After the Energy Regulatory Commission allowed power distribution utilities to make staggered payments for their May Wholesale Electricity Spot Market purchases, House Deputy Minority Leader France Castro urged the ERC to set a cap on power rate increases. Castro said in a Tuesday statement that a cap would be appropriate given the ERC’s staggered payment decision had prompted distribution utility Manila Electric Company to reduce power rates by P1.
"While the deferment of charges is a stop-gap solution, we reiterate our call for the generation companies to shoulder the added costs instead of passing it on to consumers. The ERC should also set a cap on the frequency and amount of future rate increases to provide consumers with predictable electricity pricing,” Castro added.
