Epic Games is launching a mobile app store with integration of third-party games and a free games program to challenge Apple's App Store dominance.
Epic Games is making a significant push to disrupt the mobile gaming landscape with ambitious plans to integrate nearly 20 third-party games into its mobile app store . This move will span both Android and iOS, with a particular focus on the European Union where Apple 's restrictions have been eased under the Digital Markets Act (DMA). The company is also launching a free games program for mobile, starting with Bloons TD 6 and Dungeon of the Endless: Apogee.
These games will be available monthly, with a transition to a weekly schedule in the future. To encourage developers to participate in the program and overcome the financial hurdles posed by Apple's App Store, Epic Games will cover the Core Technology Fee (CTF) for iOS developers for a year. This fee, which amounts to 50 euro cents per install for apps exceeding 1 million annual downloads and utilizing third-party stores, has been a point of contention for Epic Games. The company argues that it effectively stifles competition and hinders the growth of alternative app stores.Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney emphasized their goal of establishing a truly cross-platform store, where game purchases and digital items would be universally accessible across all supported platforms. He believes this would benefit both users and developers, providing greater freedom and flexibility. The move to cover the CTF, even at a financial loss for Epic Games, is seen as a strategic maneuver to highlight Apple's perceived anti-competitive practices and push for stronger enforcement of the DMA. While acknowledging the limitations of the current situation, Sweeney remains optimistic about the long-term prospects for app store freedom and user choice
