I am former Director of the Office of Transportation and Air Quality (OTAQ) at the United States Environmental Protection Agency, a position that culminated a 32-year career with the EPA. During my 18-year tenure as Director of OTAQ, I was the chief architect of the most important achievements in the history of air pollution control in the U.S.
My journey to clean up diesel emissions began 24 years ago. As Director of the Office of Transportation and Air Quality at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, I chaired a public hearing in Chicago before EPA issued regulations to reduce sulfur content in diesel fuel. Akin to removing lead from gasoline, reduced sulfur in diesel would be an on-ramp towards cleaner engines and fewer toxic emissions.
But even then, we knew the struggle for clean air was far from over – vehicles that run on petroleum will always emit toxic pollution into the air we breathe.fewer than 6% of vehicles on the road, but spew 25% of the greenhouse gas emissions in the entire transportation sector.
Efforts to cut commercial truck emissions is fueled by industry support. Just last month, the Heavy-duty Leadership Group which includes companies like Ford, Cummins, BorgWarner, and Eaton issued a, Daimler projected zero-emission vehicle sales would account for 40% of their market share in North America by 2030.
