EPA Administrator Lee Zeldin assures residents of the Pacific Palisades that his agency is working diligently to remove hazardous materials from the burn area caused by the Palisades and Eaton fires. The initial cleanup phase (Phase 1), shortened from 90 to 30 days under the Trump administration, involves removing dangerous remnants like electric vehicle batteries and household toxins. Phase 2, managed by the Army Corps of Engineers, focuses on debris removal and is aiming to be completed within a year. Residents express gratitude for the swift action but raise concerns about the temporary storage of hazardous materials at Will Rogers State Beach. Delays in the start of Phase 2 are also frustrating residents.

LOS ANGELES, California — Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Lee Zeldin told residents of the Pacific Palisades that his agency was “working ’round the clock” to remove hazardous material from the burn area.

Originally, the EPA was expected to take 90 days to complete its survey and cleanup of the burn area. But under the leadership of President Donald Trump and Administrator Zeldin, the timeline has been shortened to 30 days. Residents are happy that the EPA is moving quickly. However, there have been some concerns about the fact that the EPA is using the parking lot at the Will Rogers State Beach as a temporary storage site for the hazardous materials before they are removed to a safe disposal site.
