The Environmental Protection Agency announced Friday the designation of two forever chemicals as hazardous substances.

Logan Feeney pours a PFAS water sample into a container for research, Wednesday, April 10, 2024, at a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency lab in Cincinnati. The Environmental Protection Agency on Wednesday announced its first-ever limits for several common types of PFAS, the so-called " forever chemicals ," in drinking water.

Some people have termed them forever chemicals where they don't actually last forever but they can last for a very long time either in the environment or in the human body," said John Meeker, a Professor of Environmental Studies at the University of Michigan. The chemicals, PFOA and PFOS, have been used in cookware, carpets, and firefighting foams. However, this new designation doesn't mean the PFAS are being banned; rather it requires that the release of the chemicals must be reported if they exceed certain levels.

It simply means that their release into the environment has to be controlled and has to be communicated to the EPA," said Marta Venier, an Environmental Professor at Indiana University., which is the case here, also gives the EPA authority to designate other substances that might be found at contaminated sites as hazardous.
