As we commemorate one of the darkest days in recent history, we look back at how events have unfolded since that tragic day at Enyobeni Tavern in the Eastern Cape. eNCA's Ronald Masinda gives a blow-by-blow account of the tragic event in this special report. #dstv403

EAST LONDON - Almost exactly a year ago, 21 young people left their homes to attend a party at Enyobeni Tavern in the Eastern Cape. They had no idea that they’d never make it home. The reaction was swift from outraged South Africans and families who demanded to know what caused their loved ones’ deaths.

Authorities wasted no time mobilising provincial and national government resources to get to the bottom of what happened. When the official word finally came through, it sparked fresh confusion for parents who were told that traces of methanol had been detected in the dead bodies. And then the Eastern Cape Health Department confirmed the victims had, in fact, suffocated to death.* eNCA's Ronald Masinda reports.

Nigeria's Human Rights Record Still 'Very Bad' - ReportNigeria's Human Rights Record Still 'Very Bad' - ReportA new report by the Human Rights Measurement Initiative (HRMI) has found that Nigeria's human rights record is "very bad" and is "worse than [the] average in sub-Saharan Africa". "Compared with other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa, Nigeria is performing worse than average," the report said, confirming what observers and rights advocates are saying about the Nigerian state's execrable human rights record and the increasingly dismal daily experience of Nigerians. The report found that Nigeria scored very low on all four of the rights that it measured: the right to food, the right to health, the right to housing, and the right to work. Nigeria's worst score was for the right to quality education, at only 5.5%. The very poor score in education may not be surprising to most observers as Nigeria currently has the highest number of out-of-school children in the world, over 10 million, according to UNICEF. The report also found that Nigeria's government has not met its human rights obligations to its people. The report concluded that the biggest improvement for Nigeria is in the right to child health where there have been steady improvements over the past 20 years.
