Alabama environmental officials are on alert for increasingly concerning drought conditions in parts of the state.

) - Alabama environmental officials are on alert for increasingly concerning drought conditions in parts of the state.as of Sept. 15 is western Alabama , specifically Marengo County . There are concerns that the problem areas will spread to other parts of the state if we don’t see more rain soon.

“As much rain as we got earlier in the year, this is going away quickly,” said Brad Lang, northwest regional forester with the Alabama Forestry Commission. Lang said the cooler nights and days with lower humidity have made the environment just right for dry conditions. Dr. Tony Frazier, state veterinarian with the Alabama Department of Agriculture and Industries, said he is worried about how threats to water sources are impacting cattle and farmers. “Surface water, lakes, and ponds, they begin to recede a good bit and the producers may have to look for alternative sources even again for water,” he said. “Our role right now is just managing those resources.”“We’re starting to see more fires that people are either leaving unattended and they’re continuing on or they’re just not going out with the recovery at night with the moisture,” he said. Lang said October is always a drier month, and while he hopes to see the weather provide relief, it will also take the public’s help to get things under control. “If it’s smoking in any way, then know it’s going to sit there in these conditions and keep burning until it’s completely extinguished with any water, dirt, whatever you’ve got tool-wise,” said Lang. According to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, in the past week, the number of Alabama residents in areas of drought has gone up by nearly 200%.Not reading this story on the WSFA News App?
