The Green Connection and other local groups held a march to mark World Oceans Day at the Durban Promenade on Wednesday to create awareness about the threats to the country's ocean environment.
The environmentalists want an end to investments in Karpowerships and offshore oil and gas exploration projects.Durban activist Kholwane Simelane says there is a need to find tangible and inclusive solutions that will not hurt the livelihoods of small-scale fishers and coastal communities that depend on the health of the oceans.
"While its recreational activities bring joy and relaxation, for small-scale fishers, the ocean is their livelihood providing sustenance and income for their families. "It presents their cultural heritage, traditional knowledgeable and way of life. Protecting the ocean's health and ensuring sustainable fishing practices are essential to preserving the livelihoods of these fishing communities."
