KOTA KINABALU: Environmental authorities are monitoring the silica mining project sites every step of the way, says the Environmental Protection Department of Sabah.
Its director Vitalis Moduying said the processing plant had started construction, and every phase of the project was being assessed.
"So far, the developers have complied with all regulatory requirements," he said during a press conference after the launching of the third edition EIA handbook here, Thursday . In August last year, residents from five villages in Sikuati held a small protest to voice their concerns that the silica sand mining and processing project would bring environmental harm to the idyllic Bangau beach as well as the surroundings near their villages.
On May 27, Sabah Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Minister Phoong Jin Zhe said all environmental concerns raised by villagers about a silica mining project had been recorded in the EIA study.
