David Mundee ATLANTA - Decked out in a blue blazer, blue slacks, a nice white shirt unbuttoned at the top, white shoes and sunglasses shielding his eyes, former Enterprise High baseball standout Brendan Donovan brisked down the red carpet outside of Atlanta’s Truist Park on Tuesday afternoon as part of his first MLB All-Star Game Day activities.
Donovan, the St. Louis Cardinals all-star second baseman, clutched his 15-month-old daughter, Vivane, for most of the journey at the annual All-Star Red Carpet Show as his wife, Aly, in a red dress, walked alongside. Donovan, known for his work ethic, quickly strolled his way down the runaway to the clubhouse building, seemingly intent to get to work in his first All-Star Game appearance. The 2015 Enterprise High graduate earned two hits – the only player in Tuesday’s game with multiple hits. He became the first player with multiple hits in an All-Star game in two years when then Miami Marlins’ Luis Arraez had two hits in the 2023 game. He was the first St. Louis player with two All-Star hits since 2008 when Albert Pujols went 2-for-3.Listen now and subscribe: Apple Podcasts | Google Podcasts | Spotify | RSS Feed | SoundStack | All Of Our Podcasts Donovan finished the game 2-for-3 with a run scored, playing the final five innings at second base of a historic All-Star game that featured the first tiebreaker of a Swing Off Home Run Derby after the National and American League teams finished regulation tied 6-6. With three selected players from both sides given three opportunities each to hit home runs, the NL hit four homers to the AL’s three to take the win. Donovan made his first plate appearance in the bottom of the sixth inning with Fernando Tatis Jr., of the San Diego Padres on at first base after a single. The St. Louis star earned an infield hit on a 2-1 pitch off Kansas City pitcher Kris Bubic on a grounder against the shift that AL shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., fielded but rushed a throw that bounced to first that Donovan easily beat out. Donovan scored moments later on a three-run homer by the New York Mets’ Pete Alonso that gave the NL a 5-0 lead. Two innings later, Donovan fought off a 2-2 outside slider from Kansas City pitcher Carlos Estevez for a single to left-center field off but was left stranded on base. In an event that focuses on working in all 34 players on both squads into the game, Donovan, coming to bat in the ninth inning, had a rare opportunity for a three-hit game that hasn’t happened at the Mid-Summer Classic in 18 years when Hall of Famer Ichiro Suzuki of Seattle and New York Mets Jose Reyes both had three hits in the 2007 game. He also had a chance to give the NL the win with a walk-off homer and perhaps earn the game’s Most Valuable Player Award. However, Donovan made the inning’s final out on a tapper that was just fair and was tagged out by AL catcher Alejandro Kirk of the Toronto Blue Jays. Donovan had only defensive play in the game, ranging to his right and fielding a grounder by Witt with his back hand and making a throw to first for the out.David Mundee Follow David Mundee Close Get email notifications on {{subject}} daily!
