Parachutists jumped from World War II-era planes into now peaceful Normandy to kick off a week of ceremonies marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day. Soldiers from across the United States, Britain, Canada and other Allied nations waded ashore through hails of fire on five beaches on June 6, 1944.
Michelle Mann ENTERPRISE-Another “first” for a man whose resume is filled with “firsts” is the presentation of an honorary doctorate degree to Enterprise Mayor William E. Cooper Sr.
Caldwell said the honor bestowed upon Cooper is not a “regular” part of the convention’s annual agenda and was awarded because of Cooper’s decades of outstanding community service, and his contributions to the spiritual life of his community. “He exemplifies an individual who was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth but did not allow early child obstacles to get in the way of reaching heights in his life,” he said.
At Carver High School, the band director was Eugene Woods. “He was one of the best. He gave me the foundation that I have today,” said Cooper, also crediting principal John T. Porter— “a man ahead of his time—and basketball coach Dr. James A. Smith, who became the first Black principal of Northview High School. “My older brother Robert J. Cooper Jr. was my American government teacher,” Cooper said.
Cooper earned a scholarship to Alabama State Marching Band. “I thought I was the best trumpet player around until I got to Alabama State,” he recalled with a smile. Cooper was hired as band director of the then all Black Coppinville High School in Enterprise, taking the band to award winning status. Five years into his teaching career integration was mandated. Cooper went on to complete a 43-year tenure with Enterprise City Schools.
Cooper and his wife, the late Celestine Moore, are the parents to William “Spud” Cooper Jr., Pamela C. Lane and Robert J. Cooper III, grandparents to five and great grandparents of two.
