Working with both a coach and a therapist at the same time brings challenges.

For some personal and professional goals, some individuals may seek both a coach and a therapist. While some therapists are certified coaches and some coaches are credentialed therapists, it is unethical for one professional to provide both services at the same time to the same individual. Coaches and therapists approach our personal goals in different ways and address different types of issues. Coaches help you set personal and/or professional goals; strategize ways to meet those goals; work with you on skill development, performance enhancement, motivation, and accountability; and help you re-evaluate as you go. Because both professionals help you to set and address your personal goals, and the various areas of our lives routinely intersect, you need to take care to avoid conflicting strategies and plans. It is best to be open about what you are working on with each professional in order to prevent conflicts. However, it is important to keep in mind a primary distinction between coaches and therapists regarding any personal disclosure of information: Therapists are bound by laws related to privacy and confidentiality, whereas coaches are not. If you are experiencing mental health symptoms, the priority should be symptom reduction before engaging in coaching. And if you are engaging both types of help, be sure that the roles of both are clearly defined and, most important, that your needs are being met. Investing the time to meaningfully participate in coaching or therapy takes significant commitment.
