A Chicago police officer and a 16-year-old are hospitalized after a shooting in the city's Englewood neighborhood.
A Chicago police officer and a 16-year-old are hospitalized after a shooting in the city's Englewood neighborhood.The incident occurred in the 5600 block of South Shields Avenue around 12:30 p.m., when officers were conducting an "investigatory stop" on the teen.Officers were attempting to disarm the teen, who was armed with a handgun. While trying to recover the weapon from the teen’s waistband, it discharged, according to Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling.
The bullet struck the teen in the groin and then hit the officer in the leg, Snelling said. Only one shot was fired, and one shell casing was recovered.The officer was taken to the University of Chicago Hospital and is in good condition. The teen was taken to Stroger and is in stable condition.Police have not released the officer’s name but noted he joined the department in 2010. The circumstances surrounding the shooting are still under investigation.
