The Bristol Tranquiliser Project is due to close on September 30
England’s only NHS helpline dedicated to supporting people coming off antidepressants is set to close, after having its funding pulled. The closure of the Bristol Tranquilliser Project will mean there will no longer be a nationwide service to help with withdrawal, its head said.
NHS Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire Integrated Care Board, which funds the local health services, said the project wasn’t set up to serve people nationwide. BTP is set to close at the end of this month on September 30. Jane Hoyle, the project’s manager, told the BBC that by the time they come to the service, they’re often in “extreme distress”. She added that she believes many GPs are telling people to come off the drugs too quickly.
“There is much need for support in this area and we hope that the alternative providers will continue to provide this to both our existing clients and the many more yet to ask for help in the future. It has been with a heavy heart that I write this and that BTP will close its doors.“We are aware that this notice may cause much distress, especially for those still accessing our service and who are familiar with our support staff. Please do call us and we will do what we can to support you.
