Former Man United midfielder David Beckham was sent off for kicking out at Diego Simeone during the 1998 World Cup and received a torrent of abuse for his actions.
Former England and Manchester United striker Michael Owen believes David Beckham 'let England down' after getting sent off during the 1998 World Cup.
Argentina went on to win the match on penalties and Beckham received a torrent of abuse upon returning to England. In his recently released Netflix documentary, the midfielder reflected on seeing burning effigies and being spat at on the street, with manager Hoddle doing little to calm the storm afterwards as he pointed the finger at the Reds man.
In his autobiography, Owen wrote: "Sitting here now, with the benefit of hindsight and perspective, I feel that what David did probably wasn’t a red card offence in the first place. While it was clearly pre-meditated, it was immature and petulant more than it was violent. But for me, that almost makes it worse.
