The Shenzhen-based company has partnered with Beijing Interstellar Human Spaceflight Technology, a commercial space firm, to launch the Humanoid Robot Astronaut Exploration Program. The program will utilize Engine AI’s PM01 humanoid platform, a versatile embodied intelligent system designed with high-precision environmental sensors, exceptionally fast motion response, and autonomous decision-making capabilities. Last year, Engine AI made headlines by successfully having its PM01 robot perform a front flip, showcasing its advanced movement capabilities.\Space exploration presents formidable challenges that far surpass those encountered in Earth-based applications. These challenges include extreme vacuum conditions, microgravity, drastic temperature fluctuations, and high radiation levels, all of which push robotic systems far beyond their conventional operating limits. This model incorporates JD’s Joy Inside AI system, enhancing conversational abilities, coordinated behaviors, role customization, persona development, and personalized voice styles. The PM01 is a compact humanoid robot specifically developed for researchers seeking to combine human-like motion with sophisticated robotic intelligence. It features a highly interactive core display, a bionic structure that imitates human movement, and a unique waist design that allows for 320 degrees of rotation. The robot is built around a durable aluminum-alloy exoskeleton, providing a balance of strength and agility. Compared to Engine AI’s full-sized flagship humanoid, the SE01, the PM01 is substantially smaller and lighter, standing at 1.38 meters tall and weighing approximately 40 kilograms. Demonstration footage released by Engine AI showcases the PM01’s advanced visual perception capabilities, powered by an Intel RealSense depth camera for accurate spatial awareness. The robot’s dual-chip architecture integrates an NVIDIA Jetson Orin module with an Intel N97 CPU, delivering the high-performance computing necessary to handle complex perception, motion control, and demanding real-time workloads. Simultaneously, Interstellor is advancing its own space aspirations. On January 22nd, the company held its “Next Stop, Space” global launch event, revealing its roadmap for commercial crewed spaceflight and space tourism. Their plan involves the CYZ1 vehicle, potentially launching as early as 2028, offering passengers a short zero-gravity experience at an altitude of 100 kilometers. A more advanced mission, CYZ2, is slated for deployment around 2032, aiming for an orbital altitude of 400 kilometers and enabling true space tourism
