Those living in North Wales, Merseyside and London will see the biggest changes.

Many households will see a slight increase in charges this month for gas and electricity as suppliers have been allowed to update their prices. But the alterations are likely to only add pennies, not pounds, to most bills.

The changes will affect the 14 energy "regions" across Britain from the start of January and means suppliers are allowed to put their prices up to those new maximum levels for gas and electricity. The government's Energy Price Guarantee means that the average customer on a standard variable tariff pays 34p per kilowatt hour for electricity and 10.3p per kWh for gas. At those rates, a household with typical energy use will pay £2,500 a year.

The biggest changes are for customers paying in monthly or quarterly bills for their energy. Prices are increasing in all of the 14 areas for both gas and electricity with the biggest changes being for those in North Wales and Merseyside, as well as in London, which are both increasing for electricity by more than 1p per kWh.
