OpenAI is discontinuing Sora, its app that allows users to generate artificial intelligence videos with text prompts.

by CORY SMITH | The National News DeskFILE - OpenAI CEO Sam Altman speaks during Snowflake Summit 2025 at Moscone Center on June 2, 2025, in San Francisco. OpenAI is discontinuing Sora, its app that allows users to generate artificial intelligence videos with text prompts.

But OpenAI, the maker of ChatGPT, said it is winding down its partnership with Disney as it shutters the Sora app. OpenAI said it would release more information on the timeline of the Sora shutdown in the days to come. "We’ve decided to discontinue Sora in the consumer app and API. As we focus and compute demand grows, the Sora research team continues to focus on world simulation research to advance robotics that will help people solve real-world, physical tasks,” an OpenAI spokesperson told The National News Desk in an emailed statement Wednesday. A Disney spokesperson, meanwhile, told TNND in a statement that it respects OpenAI’s decision to exit the video-generation business. “We appreciate the constructive collaboration between our teams and what we learned from it, and we will continue to engage with AI platforms to find new ways to meet fans where they are while responsibly embracing new technologies that respect IP and the rights of creators,” the Disney spokesperson said via email. OpenAI said discontinuing Sora was a tough decision, but one it made as the company focuses on its “roadmap” to artificial general intelligence and agentic AI. Such breakthroughs involve autonomous AI models or models capable of matching or exceeding human cognitive abilities. The spokesperson said the goal with Sora was to teach AI to understand and simulate the physical world in motion. OpenAI said it would continue to prioritize similar research, especially as it pertains to robotics and helping people solve problems that require real-world interaction. The company said the discontinuation of Sora would not change the ChatGPT feature that allows users to create or edit images using AI from text prompts., an AI expert and the co-director of the Johns Hopkins Institute for Assured Autonomy, said OpenAI’s decision is likely being driven by a mix of financial, strategic and reputational factors. Video generation tools like Sora are expensive to run, and user subscriptions may not cover the true cost, he said.“As humans, we relied on believing our eyes and our ears. And even those benign examples, seemingly benign examples, are not all that great,” he said. “They're damaging because it erodes the overall trust we can put in our senses.’, a policy scientist and the co-director of the Governance and Responsible AI Lab at Purdue University, voiced skepticism that Sora’s demise will meaningfully reduce the number of AI-generated videos circulating online. Schiff said Sora might be among the best-known AI video platforms, but users can still turn to Google Veo, Runway, Luma, Kling and others. OpenAI had safety controls and watermarking in place, so the switch to other platforms might come with fewer guardrails, Schiff said.“I don't know if I would be super optimistic that this is going to change the landscape in the video misinformation space,” Schiff said. “It might be a temporary shock. It might change the distribution of users in the short- or medium-term.”SEMMES, Ala. - Newly released body camera video is shedding light on a controversial officer-involved shooting that left a Semmes business owner serioOn Monday, upon motion of the District Attorney’s Office, all charges against William “BJ” Squires were dismissed, according to court records.Squires is a formMobile, Ala. — The Mobile County Judicial Commission has announced a timeline for filling a vacancy on the Circuit Court following the resignation of Circuit JuBALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. -- A brush fire at the Gulf State Park has caused closures in the area."Right now, we have a state helicopter here that's dumping water fro
