When young people are on the precipice, a little help goes a long way, setting someone on a life of employment instead of deprivation . The sleeping-bagged figures in shop doorways. The tent in the woods. The cardboard village under the railway arches. But that’s all it is – a glimpse.

Others also live on the brink. They are not technically rough sleepers but are “sofa surfing”, bouncing from friend to friend. Or they catch a night bus so they have a roof over their heads. Teenage years are tricky enough without growing up alongside poor mental health, addiction, abuse or neglect – and then the support drops off when you turn 16. If you are in care, when you are 18 the chance of you facing homelessness is one in four. No wonder that 122,000
