The $16 million project started nearly two years ago

A new $5.4 million medical center will be unveiled at a community celebration Oct. 26 at the Rancho Coastal Humane Society in Encinitas.A new 5,000-square-foot animal hospital is set to be unveiled at a community celebration on Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Rancho Coastal Humane Society in Encinitas. The $16 million project that started nearly two years ago includes expansion of several buildings on the five-acre campus that opened in 1960.

The new medical facility is named after “Charlotte,” a cat who belonged to Pam and Jerry Cesak. The Cesaks served on the Rancho Coastal Humane Society Board of Directors and Jerry is still on the board. Many San Diegans might remember Jerry from the Jeff and Jer radio show, inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame in 2016.

The project includes the newly renovated Friends of County Animal Shelters Adoption Center and the 770-square-foot Brock’s Community Pet Food Bank, named after local philanthropist Brock Tella. The food bank provides pet food and supplies to community members in need. The “Little Yellow House,” which has been the nonprofit’s headquarters, was remodeled and enlarged by several hundred square feet to serve as the new welcome site for potential adopters.

“This is the first major construction since the shelter opened 64 years ago. The shelter has been pieced together. The office I share used to be the Kittery. The old Education center was a converted barn. The office manager worked in a little room that used to be a closet,” said John Van Zante, longtime spokesman for the Rancho Coastal Humane Society.

The nonprofit raised more than $16 million for the construction project from individual donors and foundations. The nonprofit raised an additional $500,000 through its Community Campaign, which kicked off earlier this year for area residents to contribute to the effort.
